Bayazid Bastami also known as Abu Yazid Bistami (804-874) was a Persian Sufi master who developed the notion of self-annihilation in the Divine. For his contributions to Sufism, Bayazid Bastami was nicknamed Sultan-ul-Arifeen (Lord of all mystics). Bayazid was a second generation Muslim and his grandfather, a follower of the Zoroastrian religion, was the first in his family to convert to Islam. His father is believed to have been one of the influential figures of Bastam.
His mausoleum is located six kilometers from Shahroud in Bastam. This three-entrance complex includes several tombs and a mosque. While the structures in this complex date back to the Seljuq (1038-1118), Ilkhanid (1256–1335), Timurid (1370–1507), Safavid (1501–1736) and Qajar (1785-1925) eras, the Ilkhanid creations stand out because of their brick and tilework.
Bayazid Bastami’s mausoleum is located inside a small metal room on the corner of the courtyard. His marble tombstone has verses from a prayer by the first Shia Imam, Ali (PBUH) (599-661), inscribed on it.
There is also a mausoleum dedicated to one of the decedents of the Prophet of Islam Muhammed (PBUH), in the complex which has a turquoise conical dome.
