Kashaneh Tower is located in the northern part of Shahroud city. According to an inscription above the entrance of this 24-meter tower, it was built in the year 1300. The tower is a triacontagon (30-side shape) which has the name of Ilkhanid ruler Oljeitu also known as Muhammad Khodabandeh (1280-1316) inscribed in Kufic script on one of the bricks in the façade. One of the sides of the tower contains a Thuluth inscription of Bismillah ar-rahman ar-rahim (In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful). Some experts like French archaeologist, architect and historian André Godard (1881-1965) believe the tower was built by Ilkhanid ruler Mahmud Ghazan (1271–1304) and was originally named Ghazaneh and became Kashaneh over time. The tower’s roof caved in many years ago but has since been renovated. While Kashaneh Tower functioned as a watchtower for Bastam its architecture resembles an observatory. The tower was registered as a National Heritage Site in 1932.
