The ruins of Markouh Fortress are located in the Markouh Mountain east of the Katalem district of Ramsar. The fortress is believed to have been a Sassanid (224-651 CE) structure, which was used for defense against enemy aggression in different Islamic eras.
The castle was constructed in a 600-square-meter using Sarouj (a Persian-invented mortar consisting of lime and clay), stone and plaster. Today, only four sections of the curtain wall surrounding the fortress and the towers stand.
The castle was registered as a National Heritage Site in 2001.
