The Portuguese Castle or the Fort of Our Lady of the Conception was built during their 110-year rule over the islands of southern Iran when the Portuguese dominated the trade route between India and Europe. The castle which sprawls over 2,000 square meters was built by Portuguese commander Alfonso de Albuquerque in 1507. Limestone, gypsum and Sarooj (mix of lime and clay) mortar has been used in the construction of this castle which was fortified several times over the one century of Portuguese rule.
The castle was originally separated from the rest of the island by a moat. It includes a water reservoir, armory, barracks, prison, church, command center and a number of halls. The castle has several 12-meter tall towers and 3.5-meter thick walls. Safavid Commander Imam-Quli Khan (?-162) ended the Portuguese rule and took over the castle in 1622.

قلعه پرتقالی ها که البته ویرانه ای بیش از آن نمانده است یکی از جاذبه های جزیره قشم است. ما در نزدیکی این قلعه در یک خانه شخصی اقامت داشتیم و امکان این را داشتیم که از بالای قلعه هر روز غروب خورشید را تماشا کنیم. در نزدیکی قلعه یک رستوران سنتی غذای دریایی هست که هر روز از صید روزانه ماهی ها غذا می پزد. . بسیار تجربه لذت بخشی بود.
