Narin Castle or Narenj Castle is a mud brick Parthian (247 BC–224 CE) structure that was used as a military fortress throughout most of its history. The castle, which has been built on a hill overlooking Meybod, spans an area of three hectares. The structure has been built in 5 stories and once had several interconnected chambers, watchtowers, defensive walls and a moat.
Excavations near the site have yielded Elamite potshards dating back to 4,000 years ago. Some experts believe that these potshards and that the structure has been made in five stories could mean that Narin Castle was actually an Elamite Ziggurat. Ziggurats are mud brick temples.
Some believe that it is the White Castle mentioned in Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh (Book of Kings) and other experts have speculated that the castle is where settlements in Yazd Province began to take form.
Narin Castle has been renovated several times and has been registered as a National Heritage Site.
