The Statute of Hercules near Bisotun Mountain dates back to 153 BC. Some experts believe the statues signifies that there was a Greek temple in Bisotun indicating that the Greek considered this mountain, its plain and rivers holy places. According to documents, after the invasion of Iran by Alexander (356- 323 BC), Greek immigrants set out for the conquered lands and built cities and temples and formed Greek communities in the heart of the Persian society. Their efforts to Hellenize Iran failed as no other major works, besides the Hercules Statue, remains from that period.
