Lut Desert also known as Dasht-e Lut is a large salt desert northeast of Kerman. This 320-kilometer desert is considered the 25th largest desert in the world. The desert is one of the driest and hottest places on the planet with temperatures of the sand surface reaching as high as 70.7 °C. The hottest point of the desert is an area called Gandom Beryan, which means toasted wheat in the Persian language. Legend has it that a load of wheat was left in the desert and when the owners came back to collect it after a few days they found it had been scorched by the heat. Lut has been registered as a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site.
