The Great Wall of Gorgan, also known as the Red Wall or the Red Snake because of the red bricks used in its construction, is a magnificent defensive structure which is believed to have been constructed during the Sassanid era (224-651 AD). Second only to the Great Wall of China in terms of length, the Wall of Gorgan predates the Chinese wall by 1,000 years. The Great Wall of Gorgan is nearly 195 kilometers long and 6-10 meters wide and stretches from the mountains north of the city of Gonbad-e Kavus to the shores of the Caspian Sea. There are more than 30 fortresses along the wall which was erected to protect the country against attacks by the northern tribes, particularly the White Huns of Central Asia. The Great Wall of Gorgan was registered as a National Heritage Site in 1999.
