Gorgan Palace is one of the 12 Pahlavi era (1925-1979) palaces in Iran which was built in 1938 by Reza Shah (1878-1944), the founder of the dynasty. This 77-year-old place is a two-story structure built in the European style of architecture over the foundations of an older Safavid (1501–1736) building. Gorgan Palace was turned into a museum in 1964 to house the items uncovered during excavations of various archeological sites in and around Gorgan. The museum operated with a collection of 152 items until 1982.
The museum was closed for a few years and after renovation efforts it was once again opened in 2009. This museum currently showcases 100 items which previously belonged to the Pahlavi family, tomb stones dating from the 9th to 19th century, and items datable to 5,000- to 150-years-ago. The museum also has displays dedicated to 30 prominent figures from Golestan Province.
Gorgan Palace was registered as a National Heritage Site in 1957.
