Lut Desert also known as Dasht-e Lut is a large salt desert in south east Iran. Lut Desert borders southern Birjand in the north, Kerman in the west, the Bam-Zahedan road in the south and the mountains of Sistan-Baluchestan Province in the east. Lut is one of the driest and hottest places on the planet with temperatures of the sand surface reaching as high as 70.7 °C. The hottest point of the desert is an area called Gandom Beryan, which means toasted wheat in the Persian language. Legend has it that a load of wheat was left in the desert and when the owners came back to collect it after a few days they found it had been scorched by the heat. Lut has been registered as a UNESCO Natural Heritage Site.
