Before becoming part of South Khorasan Province in 2012, Tabas was a city in Yazd Province. Tabas borders the cities of Bardaskan and Shahroud in the north, Ferdows and Birjand in the east, Kerman Province in the south and Naein, Ardakan and Bafq in the west and southwest.
Tabas is a desert city that experiences scorching hot summers and mild winters. Because of its climate many speculate the city’s name comes from the Persian word “Tab,” meaning “hot” or “feverish.”
The history of the city is believed to date back to the Sassanid (226-651 CE) era even though no archeological studies have been conducted to verify this claim.
Tabas was almost completely destroyed after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the city in 1978. Nearly 10,000 people lost their lives as a result of this natural disaster.
Tabas is also where the failed Operation Eagle Claw by American Armed Forces took place in 1980.
Some of the city’s best-known historical attractions include the resting place of Imamzadeh Hussein ibn Musa al-Kadhim who was the brother of Imam Reza (PBUH), the Afsharid (1736–1796) era Golshan Garden with its perennial stream and resident pelicans, Shah Abbasi Dam which was the world’s tallest arch dam for 550 years and is said to be the thinnest dam in the world, the mudbrick Esfahak Village where tradition is not a thing of the past and folk music thrives, and the centuries old Kerit Dam that withstood the devastating earthquake of 1978.
Kal-Jenni Valley with its ponds and manmade stone cavities, Morteza Ali Springs (cold and hot) which not only have therapeutic properties but are also known for running in parallel without mixing, the tiered Nayband Village and its covered alleys which are reminiscent of famous Masouleh and Abyaneh Villages, Halvan Cave which is 160 million years old, Rooh Marghoom Playa with its salt lands, Halvan Desert with its colorful animal and plant life, and the uniquely-shaped Robat-e Khan Desert are among the natural attractions of Tabas.
