Baba Tahir’s Mausoleum, is located in a rectangular, green garden near the northern entrance of the city of Hamadan. The original structure of the mausoleum consisted of an octagonal tower over Baba Tahir’s tomb.

In 1970 and during the reign of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi (1919-1980), a new brick structure was built to replace the old mausoleum. It was during this time that a tilework inscription datable to the 13th century was discovered. This inscription, which is now housed at the National Museum of Iran, is in turquoise tiles with embossed Quranic verses in the Kufic calligraphy hand.

The current mausoleum is a combination of 12th and 13th century architecture with modern designs. This tower-like structure is 25 meters tall and has 8 pillars built on an octagonal base.

The pillars, tomb stone, floors and stairs of the mausoleum are covered in hand-masoned granite. The façade of the structure has cylindrical patterns in its design and light vents. The structure has a turquoise conical dome. The underdome has colorful, beautiful mo’arraq tile decorations.

Twenty-four of Baba Tahir’s most famous Do-baytis (a genre of Persian poem) have been inscribed on 24 pieces of marble and decorate the interior of his mausoleum. There are two brass plaques that bear the names of the prominent people buried alongside Baba Tahir and a list of the founders of his mausoleum. The interior of the mausoleum also has extensive tile decorations.

Baba Tahir’s Mausoleum has undergone several renovations over the past two centuries. The structure has been registered as a National Heritage Site.

One of the most respected Persian poets, Baba Tahir was born and lived in Hamadan. It is believed that this 11th century poet was a wandering dervish, who he had forsaken all worldly possessions, because of his nickname ‘Oryan’ (The naked). 

According to some scholars, Baba Tahir is the first Persian poet to have a divan (book of poems). Today, his quatrains, which have amorous and mystical connotation, are often recited to the sound of setar (Persian three-stringed lute).

Beloved! You, only you, know my heart,

You, solely you, can brace my soul!

All that is revealed of me,

And all that I conceal, you see!

And I, I’m not aware,

Why, why I long, in despair!

And I know not of relief or repair

Save the healing your grace confers.

The bid to front the perils unafraid

Is the omen for all charmed in your bait

In this path, reason fails, cautious is unpaid.'
